Yes, really I did. I grew in a very racially divided city on the border of the midwest and the south - so for me to make a statement like that would be unusual from where I came from. I also, though, had parents who were open in terms of welcoming anyone into their home regardless of race, religion, ethnic background, socioeconomic status etc and so on. Some of you reading this may not think this is a very remarkable thing. But without giving my age away too much (LOL) - this WAS a remarkable thing BECAUSE of where I grew up and the decade.

I think if I didn’t have the parents I was blessed with, this statement I made in the title of this post would not have come easily from my lips. Imagine 1976, a time where our nation was in a huge transition period. Imagine this family, of upper middle class origins – very upper middle class I might add – allowing children that weren’t white into their home, often weekly, to participate in such activities as swimming and tutoring.   I am sure a few eyebrows were raised.  In my opinion, this type of upbringing allowed me to the view the world in different eyes than many of peers and eventually gave me a leg up, socially. down the road.  I am not touting that I am free of stereotypical thinking.  Nor am I saying I  am SO enlightened that a negative thought has never crossed my mind.  But because of my parents, it helped me to establish the belief that race is not a defining factor when it comes to Personhood.
040212-1But back to the title – here I was a blond-haired, blue-eyed child for the most part exposed to people who looked a lot like me except for the visitors my parents welcomed into our home.  My neighbors were white, my school had mandatory busing but the classrooms were still very racially divided. I was in the advanced classes that were, well, largely white students.  I really didn’t really understand the reasons for these divisions but they existed.

One lazy summer day on cable there was an all day film festival primarily of what is now called Blaxploitation films:  Uptown Saturday Night, Let’s Do it Again and eventually Foxy Brown.  I was seven, damn it. What did I know about this genre except the fact the first film featured Bill Cosby and he always made me laugh.  So there I was in the spacious “den” of my house, laughing and acting out the action scenes like I was a part of the films. But most of all, I was mesmerized by Pam Grier, hell I wanted to be Pam Grier.  In these films, the women were powerful, beautiful and independent.  In my seven-year old mind, to be strong, independent and beautiful I should become black.  Whoopi Goldberg once described in detail about how as a child she would walk around with a towel on her head,  pretending to have beautiful blond hair. I wanted the opposite:  dark skin, dark hair, dark eyes. To me, white beauty was boring. I wanted to be Foxy Brown.
040213-2
Now here I am now second life, dressing my avatar like a black woman.  At first I had my typical pang of “white guilt” in doing this and the statements such as the following ran through my head:

  • How dare I adorn my avatar in black skin when I don’t understand what is to be black!
  • Am I perpetuating stereotypes when imagining myself as Foxy Brown?
  • Is this right for me to do when I come from a country that held black americans in Servitude for what, close to 200 years?
  • Do I dare portray myself as a black character (Gorean in origin or even of Earth) in Gor?  Will people misinterpret my intent if I play an enslaved black woman?

These are questions that ran through my head the last week or so.  But damn it, I think Elle looks pretty in her black skin AND there some amazing ethnic skins coming out now (gotta work on the hairs though creators)! So why not celebrate the beauty of being black even when it’s not really who I am beyond the keyboard? For now I will end with this question and maybe talk a bit more about this in other posts.   Pfft, I hardly post now as it is so who knows if or when I will put thoughts to words anytime soon. So until then, take care my friends and have a great second life.

Contemplation

The birds they sang
at the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don’t dwell on what
has passed away
or what is yet to be.
Ah the wars they will
be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
bought and sold
and bought again
the dove is never free.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.

Anthem - Leonard Cohen

Starlet 1
The other day I was talking to Xamirus aka Napoleon aka my partner extraordinaire about fashion blogging in second life. While showing him a few of my favorite sites, I couldn’t help but hear a whole lot of exasperated sighs on the other end of the line. “What is wrong?” I asked him. “Can’t you see it?” he exclaims. “These bloggers wear way too many layers. They have a jacket on top of a jacket on top of a sweater on top of a shirt on top of a pair of shorts over a pair of jeans and then about a billion accessories too.”  After several minutes of laughter, he ended his “assessment” by saying, “Come on now. You watch Project Runway – Michael Kors would be blasting these people for trying too hard!”

Yeah, he is probably right. If I walked around Austin in some of the outfits I feature in my SL blog, I would get a few raised eyebrows. But that’s the point of SL right? It’s not real, its fantasy and a pretty picture world of what you could be if you lived in computer. So to all you bloggers out there who throw away the reality in search of fantasy – I salute you.
Starlet 2
Okay about the outfit: Yeah, the look really has absolutely nothing to do with what I am talking about here, well kind of. It does have a lot of layers AND the photos have a 1950s movie feel to it.  It definitely is fantasy, minimal basic fantasy albeit. Plus I finally went to a gatcha festival for the first time in SLife. Woot and I have the manager of Tee*fy/LaViere to thank for that.  She was super nice to me one day when I asked about an old gatcha camera - she told me about the swap groups, the after the gatcha event sales places etc.  Now If only I could remember her name, *sigh*.  Any who that’s all I got today. So as the norm, take care my friends and have a great second life!

An American in....Lula 2
Sacrebleu, do I look major French stereotype here or what!. Speaking of the phrase “sacrebleu,” my friend Sasi informed my partner Xamirus that there is no such phrase used by native French speakers. “MERDE!” I exclaimed, “Damn that Agatha Christie and her falsehoods.”

Edited to add:  Sasi, in her very french way, corrected the above statement.  Apparently Xamirus said “Sacre Bleu” and not “Sacrebleu” which does exist but is very old fashioned thing to say.  :)

An American in....Lula 1
By the way, I am referring to the Hercule Poirot series in my Agatha Christie rant above. Any who, my outfit was cute and the Lula sim is great so that’s all that matters right? And oh, love this new hair from Laviere – Go buy it now!

Yes, I love to ramble, no I am not imbalanced, LOL – well, maybe. Well that’s all I got folks. So as per the norm, take care my friends and have a great second life!

I shopped at Ann Taylor in SL 3Continuing on this Real Life/Second Life theme today, here is my take on Ann Taylor in Second Life.  For any of you not familiar with brand, Ann Taylor and The Loft by Ann Taylor, these speciality women’s stores are what I would classify as classic with a flair.  Along with great pieces for work, the stores also offer great accessories and some fabulous daytime to nighttime transition pieces.  The Ann Taylor store in particular also features cocktail/wedding attire that I really dig.
I shopped at Ann Taylor in SL 2
The one of the latest accessory pieces at The Loft are flower lapel pins.  Let me tell ya, I loved these in the early 2000s and I still love them now. In fact I saw one in the store very similar to this hair corsage from Tomoto.  Woot, label pins for the WIN!

Okay that’s all I got today, so take care my friends and have a great Second Life!

Shopping 2
“I am exhausted,” Lizzie thought to herself as she sat down at the table outside her local Starbucks. “I guess I could order a latte,” she mumbled to herself.   “Surely that would get me going.” Suddenly an idea popped into Lizzie’s head. “I know what will wake me up and pronto…shopping!”
Shopping 1
“I need a shopping injection and STAT,” she exclaimed as she bolted through the doors of Mon Tissu  - shopping R&R always does the trick for Lizzie.  So after a few hours of blissfully thumbing through the racks of Mon Tissu, Lizzie left the store refreshed and ready for the day. YAY!

Picnic 2The day was sunny and bright, the air just warm enough but not too warm to deter Elle from taking a walk one fine spring afternoon. Sometimes Elle’s mind gets all confuzzled with the daily events and only a bit of time in nature can calm her down. So there she went off into the woods near Happy Mood in search of that perfect spot for a photo.
Picnic 1She walked and walked and walked and walked and walked (yes that was a lot of walking, I know). and finally, she found the location that fit the image in her mind for the perfect photo spot. So there she stood going clickity click click over and over with her camera. Eventually, the clouds in her mind cleared up and her mood matched the beauty of the day.  So be like Elle now and then and spend some time in nature: No computers, no cellphones, nothing…just you and the plants and the flowers and the trees and the squirrels. I promise you, it will bring a song to your heart, a spring to your step and for even just a few moments, your cares will be left behind you.

The Church 2

The woman had been going to church for many years. She was raised a Lutheran and like all good Lutherans she went through the rites of communion at age ten, learned her catechisms at fourteen and was confirmed soon after. Over the years her attendance was fairly consistent, some years though less than others but lately she just didn’t feel like making the journey every Sunday. She had just turned ninety years old and she felt like she had done her time.

The woman was still very active in her late years: She still drove, had lunch with friends (some much younger but that didn’t seem to make a difference) and made sure her hair was coiffed and her appearance put together to look just so. Her beauty only seem to get better with age and not a day went by where she didn’t put her best foot forward to look polished. It was a Saturday and she awoke promptly at 8:30 and made her way downstairs to start her day. As she walked to the door to fetch the morning paper, she saw an envelope on the flooring next to the door. “How did that get there,” she said to herself as she picked it up. The envelope was unsealed but it was addressed to her.

Slowly she opened it and read it there by the door. In ornate handwriting the letter said as follows:

I want to personally invite you to this new congregation I am forming. Please come to the 2nd Avenue Church tomorrow at 9 am. Refreshments will be provided. See you there.

Oddly the letter was unsigned.

Intrigued the woman arose the following day and dressed in her Sunday best. She got into her car promptly at 8:30 and made her way to the church. As she parked her car, she noticed hers was the only car there. She shrugged and mumbled to herself “I guess I am a bit early…as always,” then made her way to the front door. The door was large, wooden with ornate hinges and door knobs. It was very heavy and it took her a bit of muscle power to open it. As she stepped into the church, she gasped. Before her was a magnificent, white room, glowing from streams of light coming through the back windows.

The Church 1

She glanced down at her hands and suddenly she no longer saw the hands of a ninety year old woman, but instead of someone at least sixty years younger. Slowly she moved her hand to hair and stroked it few times. She jumped a bit when she realized no longer was it up in the perfect bun she wove – rather it was now long and loose. The color had changed to from the soft silvery shade she had gotten used to the past few to a rich russet tone. She stood there for a few moments in a state of shock, too scared to move.

In the distance she could make out the outline of people moving towards her – their arms open and wide, faces smiling. She screamed when a man approached her that looked just like her husband at age forty-five, which incidentally was the year they met. “No, no my love…do not be afraid. I am here to guide you to the next place in your journey,” he said to in a soft, comforting tone. He held out his hand to her and hesitantly she took it as they followed the crowd to the back of the room.

Slowly they walked together for what seemed like hours to the woman, finally stopping in front of a white piano. There he sat down and began to play a lovely tune – strange and familiar at the same time. After a few minutes, he looked up at her and said “Welcome home my love…I am so glad to see you.” And there she stood, saying nothing as the sound of the piano keys filled her ears.

The day was cold but sunny, the air brisk and refreshing as Elle began her walkabout on Atomic Island. Originally she came to peruse the shops for a while looking at the various sales going on in the different stores located on the island. But instead she got distracted by the sights and sounds of the people around her and the adorable build that filled her eyes. So instead of shopping, she decided to find her a quiet spot on a bridge and people watch.

There Ella stood for almost an hour watching the people TP in and out, spending their time trying on various items and demos. At one point she even caught sight of her friend Arica Storaro, a new blogger on the scene, trying on a demo from what she believed to be a hair from Ploom. Ella smiled and thought about how these little moments in Second Life make all the difference – the value of the quiet moments should be allowed to supersede the value of the dramatic and noisy ones. It has been a five-year journey for Elle, alongside her other selves, and her hope is to have many more small moments like this in the coming year.

Happy Winter Moments Everyone!
