Coin Girl 2
Coin Girls – the lowest of the lowest slaves in the World of Gor.  She is a street slave sent out at night by her Master to earn coin but only for himself.  The Coin Girl is equivalent in a way to a modern day street prostitute but none of the earnings will ever be hers to keep.

Coin girls were a form of street slave, usually sent into the streets around dusk by their masters, who commonly own several of them, with a chain on their neck, to which would be attached, normally, a bell, to call attention to their whereabouts, and a small, locked coin box. And woe to the girl who returns with coins jangling in the box! To be sure, in some places, one might even have a paga slave, or a brothel slave, for as little as a tarsk bit.
Renegades of Gor pg 103
Coin Girl 1

Wound about the neck of the Coin Girl are chains with little lock box for her customers to place their coins by dropping it into a small shot – the box and chains are both secured with locks making it difficult to remove.  The use of locks and a locked box prevents not only the slave from touching the money, which is forbidden by many Masters, but keeps it safe from theft.

Too, it is not unknown for a master to sometimes send even an exquisitely trained, beautiful high slave into the streets, usually as a joke or a discipline. Such a girl knows that she must perform superbly. Some of the men she falls in with may have been hired by her master, to report back on the quality of her services.”
Guardsman of Gor pg 150
Coin Girl 3

At times even high slave is sent to the streets by her Master as a form of discipline or in attempt to assert his dominance upon her if she becomes too willful towards him. For a high slave, being reduced to the status of a coin girl is shameful and an embarrassment to her unlike any other potential punishment a Master could inflict upon his slave.

Currently my slave character has been reduced to that of a common coin girl - dropped from her pedestal as a high slave.  It should be an interesting twist in her story and as a representation of her change of status, her beautiful ginger tresses have been dyed almost black.  *sigh* Poor Elle, will she ever be granted her sandals and beautiful frocks once again?

Quietly she stood in the procession line for the companionship ceremony for the Ubar and his new Ubara.  As a Display Slave her only role is to show her beauty among her Master’s caravan to help impress upon  those around him the power and the wealth he possesses.  Dressed in the finest silks and draped in gold and gems, she walks silently in the front of the procession doing her best to display her refinement and the impossible beauty of a slave girl of Gor, like no other.  She simply is a Display Slave…no more, no less.

*Outfit Note – I wore this outfit today from Deviance in a role play session in Fina and it is simply amazing.  The look is all prims and even though the skirt is a bit challenging to edit, the final result was well worth it.

I glanced at the two women of the “strange men” on the lacquered platform.  They were looking at Cecily, but I saw no evidence of envy, hostility or jealousy.  This was quite different from the way in which the Gorean free woman would look upon a slave girl.  They see the slave as a vulnerable, but hated rival, with whom, with the interest of men, they could not compete.  These women, however, seemed to view Cecily more as one might view a lovely pet, doubtless of great interest to men but not really constituting a threat to themselves, and their position.  I would later learn that these were, indeed, “contract women,” who, as girls, were often sold to pleasure houses, most often by their parents.  Sometimes, too, they would sell themselves to such a house, to be trained in the arts of pleasure, for example, music, dancing, singing, conversation and such.  As their contracts could be bought and sold they were in effect, slaves, but they were not thought of such.  For example, they occupied an understood, accepted and generally respected niche in their society.  They were not tunicked, not branded, not collared, and so on.  They were not “collar-girls.”  Indeed they regarded themselves, without arrogance, and with much justification, as far superior to collar-girls.  They were in their view a different category all together. — Swordsmen of Gor, page 195

The latest book from John Norman, Swordsman of Gor, introduces the reader to a new Gorean culture known as the Pani people.  Largely based on Japanese culture, the Pani culture has introduced new and intriguing roles prime for Gorean role play.  One of these roles in particular that has received quite a bit of attention is referred to by Norman as ”Contract Women”.

Similar to the Japanese Geisha, the Contract Woman is somewhere between a Free Woman and a slave.  She is not collared nor owned but is described by Norman as a “trained, refined entertainer” whose services are paid for by their clients.  In other words, a geisha.  Controversial and provocative is the response thus far across the Gorums and blogs in regards to the “Contract Women” and the Pani people in general.  But with the love of Japanese culture amongst second life residents, I contend this is a role that will be popular and enriching for many a role player

The clothing style described in Swordsman also appears to be similar to that of the Japanese Geisha as well.  The primary wardrobe of the Contract Woman seems to be similar to a kimono and in anticipation of Pani RP, GSpot has recently released this gorgeous Pani Contract Woman look for this emerging trend in Gorean role play.  Further more, last weekend the City of Nara opened which is a sim devoted to Pani RP.  I have had a chance to visit the sim myself and I am very impressed with both the build and the spirit of the sim.  Hats off to Hayato Kenshi AKA Dillusion Resident, City of Nara sim owner, for jumping head first into this new mode of RP with elegance and grace – I wish you great success.

“Run” cried the woman. “Flee for your life”
I saw her eyes wild with fear for a moment above the
rep-cloth veil and she had sped past me.
She was peasant, barefoot, her garment little more than
coarse sacking. She had been carrying a wicker basket con-
taining vulos, domesticated pigeons raised for eggs and meat.
~ Nomads Of Gor

The Caste of Peasants, as written in Tarnsman of Gor:

“Economically, the base of the Gorean life was the free peasant, which was perhaps the lowest but undoubtedly the most fundamental caste, and the staple crop was a yellow grain called Sa-Tarna, or Life-Daughter.”

They are the backbone of Gorean society and their mode of dress and mannerisms reflect their status.  Rarely do they live in “civilized” Gor, in as much as they live most of their lives in palisade villages located near the fields in which they work tending to the crops and animals.  They are rarely literate and are largely described as ignoble, brutal, ignorant and superstitious.  But these descriptions may a result of the larger Gorean society’s attempts to limit their understanding and knowledge of the world as a whole.

In an effort to keep the lower castes in its place, including the peasants, they are for the most only exposed to what is called “First Knowledge”:  A worldview largely based on myths and lies such as the world is flat and does not move through space, that magic is real and the initiates are the possessors of this magic.  This is because most Gorean Cities are dependent upon the work of the peasants for food, grain and produce and other harsher labors.  So if the peasants were to attempt to rise in caste, the larger society might lose a vital work force.

She wore a sleeveless, calf-length brown dress, woven of the wool of the bounding hurt. This was, in spite of the lack of sleeves, clearly the garment of a free woman. That could be told by such things as its quality, length, sturdiness and opacity. It did not, for example, as might have rep cloth, a light, clinging fabric often used for slave garments, make obvious the lineaments of its occupant’s figure. But, too, it was surely the sort of garment that would be likely to be worn only by a woman of the lower castes. It was a simple, plain, everyday work garment. -Vagabonds of Gor

Simple, and unsophisticated is how one might describe the behavior of the peasant and for the Peasant Free Woman, practical and at times, less than ladylike. The garments of a Peasant Women reflect this practical lifestyle.  Often lacking in color and may at times reveal her arms and shoulders, it still reflects modestyin as much as the garments of the Peasant Women would never reveal her curves.

The Gorean Peasant Women may be the most independent of all of the women in Gor and have been known to venture out into distant villages and buy her own way into companionship.  But even the Free Women of this caste can fall into the bounds of the collar.  If a peasant girl is deemed worthy, she may be stolen and enslaved by wandering outlaws or slavers.  But this may pose a challenge for her captor as reflected in the following quote:

Sometimes when low-caste women are enslaved they must be taught to be more ladylike, as their masters will have that of them. Their mouths, for example, may be washed out with soap, literally. That is a symbolic, but surely unpleasant, lesson they are not likely to forget. And it may be repeated as often as the master pleases.

The Caste of Peasants ,”the ox on which the homestone rests” as Norman referred to them in Outlaw of Gor, is a rich and complex role in Gorean Role Play.  It is one in my opinion with many opportunities for creativity and ideas for those willing to take on the challenge.

From where she knelt she could see the low-hanging tharlarion oil lamps of the main portion of the Paga tavern, the men, the girls in silk who, in a moment, belled, would move among them, replenishing the paga.
Assassin of Gor

The girl moved about the crowd with the flask of Paga cradled by her right arm.  It would be long night at the Paga tavern and under the stern hand of her Master, the tavern owner, and she must be in her best form in her service.  Not only is it her duty to serve the paga but for the cost of the drink she may also be “used” by the patron in one of the many alcoves in the corners of the room and the floor above.  She is one of many girls owned by her Master here to serve the free in the tavern.  At some point when she earns her Master’s trust, she will be allowed to roam the streets of the city as advertisement for the tavern and to ultimately bring men back to the tavern to spend their hard earned coin.  Another one of her Master’s girls across from her was being pulled into an alcove with a look of shock on her face.  She noticed the tavern owner jump from behind the bar and grab the patron’s shoulder, pulling him back.  Her Master yelled “She is a dancer fool…it will be extra for HER use.”  The man then released the girl and returned to his table to sulk.

Such is the life of the Paga Tavern slut – serving in her Master’s house during the day such as cleaning and cooking – but at night she must be her most beautiful and alluring while serving in the tavern.  Because the more beautiful the girls, the more coin the men will spend which in the end will make her Master very happy.

The Wagon People – a fierce, nomadic people comprised of four distrinct tribes:

  • Kassars – The Kassars are known as the Blood People. Their standard is a scarlet three-weighted bola, hanging from a lance. Their brand, which is used on both slaves and bosk, is a stylized representation of a bola: three circles joined at the center by lines.
  • Kataii – The Kataii are black-skinned. Their standard is a yellow bow, bound across a black lance. Their brand is a yellow bow, facing to the left.
  • Paravaci – The Paravaci are known as The Rich People. Their standard is a large banner of jewels strung on golden wires, forming the head and horn of a bosk. The value of such a standard is incalculable. The Paravaci brand is a stylized representation of a bosk head: a semi-circle resting on an inverted isosceles triangle. It is a peculiarity of the Paravaci that they deck themselves with ropes of precious stones when going into battle. However, this is not vanity on their part. It is a ploy to encite envy, and thus to provoke fights with their enemies. The Paravaci is fond of luxurious goods, but is vain only in the matter of his courage.
  • Tuchuck – their standard is a representation of 4 bosk horns and the tribe largely featured in Nomads of Gor. (Courtesy of Gor Information)

“The Wagon Peoples claimed the southern prairies of Gor, from the gleaming Thassa and the mountains of Ta-Thassa to the southern foothills of the Voltai Range itself, that reared in the crust of Gor like the backbone of a planet. On the north they claimed lands even to the rush-grown banks of the Cartius, a broad, swift flowing tributary feeding into the incomparable Vosk.” — Nomads of Gor, page 2.

No caravans, to my knowledge, make their way to the Wagon Peoples, who are largely isolated and have their own way of life. — Nomads of Gor, page 4 (footnote).

Who are the Wagon People and where do they fit into the larger cultural society of Gor.  They are nomads who largely keep their world and reality focused on the environment of the Turian plains and avoiding “civilized” Gor as much as possible.  The culture is tribal in nature and they have their own distinct ways of living from the rest of Gorean society.

From a real life perspective, I view the Wagon People as a blending by Norman of Nineteenth Century Western US Prairie Settlers, European Gypsies and the nomadic tribes of US and Asian.  The Tuchuck tribe which is depicted significantly in Nomads of Gor seems to be the most like the Western Settlers of the US – their wagons roaming across the Great Plains in search of a better and new way of life.  The one difference that seperates the Wagon People of Gor and the Western Settlers of the US is the ongoing battle between the four tribes and the City of Turia for women, wealth and bragging rights.

Tuchuk women, unveiled, in their long leather dresses, long hair bound in braids, tended cooking pots hung on “tem-wood tripods over dung fires. These women were unscarred, but like the bosk themselves, each wore a nose ring. That of the animals is heavy and of gold, that of the women also of gold but tiny and fine, not unlike the wedding rings of my old world. Nomads of Gor, page 27

The way of dress for the Women of the Wagon People is reflective of their culture: Fabrics primarily of leather and hide allow the women the ability to work easily and when necessary ride a kaiila and tend to the Bosk herd.  Her garb is utilitarian in nature and they never wear a veil.

“Stand aside, you fool!” cried a girl’s voice, and to my astonishment, astride the saddle of the monster I espied a girl, young, astonishingly beautiful, vital, angry, pulling at the control straps of the animalShe was not as the other women of the Wagon Peoples I had seen, the dour, thin women with braided hair, bending over the cooking pots.

She wore a brief leather skirt, slit on the right side to allow her the saddle of the kaiila; her leather blouse was sleeveless; attached to her shoulders was a crimson cape; and her wild black hair was bound back by a band of scarlet cloth. Like the other women of the Wagons she wore no veil and, like them, fixed in her nose was the tiny, fine ring that proclaimed her people.

Spirited and free is how one would describe the women of the Wagons.  If beautiful enough, they are raised with priviledge and status among the higher wagons of the tribe.  But this status comes with a risk – they are groomed to be a prize in the Love Wars.

The institution of Love War is an ancient one among the Turians and the Wagon Peoples…The games of Love War, of course, are celebrated every spring…
—Nomads of Gor, 10:115

The theoretical justification of the games of Love War, from the Turian point of view, is that they provide an excellent arena in which to demonstrate the fierceness and prowess of Turian warriors, thus perhaps intimidating or, at the very least, encouraging the often overbold warriors of the Wagon Peoples to be wary of Turian steel. …
—Nomads of Gor, 10:116

As I knew, not just any girl, any more than just any warrior, could participate in the games of the Love War. Only the most beautiful were eligible, and only the most beautiful of these could be chosen.
—Nomads of Gor, 10:117

To be a”fit prize” in the Love Wars,  the woman is at risk of losing her freedom to slavery.  One by one the woman are strapped to posts watching a contest ensue between a fighter from the Wagon People fighting on her behalf and Turian warrior battling for the freedom of a Turian girl.  If her champion loses, she is enslaved by the winner but the other girl remains free.  Because of the Love Wars, most of the slaves in the Wagon camps are Turian and likewise in Turia, the girls are of the Wagon People.  Beauty in these cultures may come with a heavy price.

Kamchak laughed. “She is Hereena, a wench of the First Wagon,” he said.

“Tell me of her,” I said.

“What is there to tell?” asked Kamchak.

“What does it mean to be of the First Wagon?” I asked.

Kamchak laughed. “You know little of the Wagon Peoples,” he said.

“That is true,” I admitted.

“To be of the First Wagon,” said Kamchak, “is to be of the household of Kutaituchik.”……

“There are a hundred wagons in the personal household of Kutaituchik,” said Kamchak. ‘Not be of any of these wagons is to be of the First Wagon.”

“I see,” I said. “And the girl-she on the kaiila-is perhaps the daughter of Kutaituchik, Ubar of the Tuchuks?”

“No,” said Kamchak. “She is unrelated to him, as are most in the First Wagon.”

“She seemed much different than the other Tuchuk women,” I said.

Kamchak laughed, the colored scars wrinkling on his broad face. “Of course,” said Kamchak, “she has been raised to be fit prize in the games of Love and War.” Nomads of Gor, page 32-33

For me personally, I find the culture of the Wagon People to be romantic and beautiful and thus far Nomads is one of my favorite books.  Perhaps it is reflective of the western spirit that still exists in the US state in which I raised, Oklahoma, and the time I spent on my family’s ranch as a child.  So who knows where my journey in Gor will lead me – perhaps to the plains of Turia and a life as Tuchuck Free Woman.

The man stood in the doorway, in the somber garb of his caste.
“I see you wear the scarlet of the warrior,” he said. It was true. I had awakened in the tunic of my caste. The furs had been taken from me.

“And you, my friend,” said I, “are clothed now in the proper habiliments of your caste.” He wore now, brazenly, the black of the Assassin. Over his left shoulder, looped on a ringed strap, he wore a blade, the short sword.
Beasts of Gor Book 12 Page 347

Yet none would stand in the way of Kuurus for he wore on his forehead, small and fine, the sign of the black dagger.
When he of the Caste of Assassins has been paid his gold and has received his charge he affixes on his forehead that sign, that he may enter whatever city he pleases, that none may interfere with his work.

“A pretty one,” said a voice. It was a woman’s voice. She was incredibly beautiful. She wore a collar. Her garment was white, and came to her ankles, in classic folds. She did not wear the brief work tunic of the other girls. I gathered she was the high girl in the camp and I, and the other girls, would have to obey her. It is uncommon, where several girls are concerned, to put a woman over them. Men do not care to direct us in our tasks. They only wish to see that they are done.  Captive of Gor Pg 216

I imagine Ena, the high slave described in the excerpt above, would have dressed in a look similar to Casa Del Shai’s“La Eleganza”.  It is a beautifully draped and textured look and yes it is true, Casa Del Shaiis not a Gorean Brand by any means, but this look simply fits the role to the tee.

I tend to look at many of the characters of Captive of Gor as a point of reference in my role play.  Ena, in terms of how she carried out her duties as a High Slave is of particular interest.  In many ways, she seemed to be a mentor to the other girls and avoided the stereotypical slave rivalry I have seen in other books.  She was elegant, well mannered and caring and of course well dressed *smiles*.

*Many thanks to stiller Himmel for letting me know about this lovely dress via the Gorean Forums.  Also, please check out his blog, Silent Sky – it is simply divine.

I was thinking in terms of the high slave, one of great value, one who might even expect sandals, to say nothing of costly, if revealing, silks, and perhaps even a golden collar. – Witness of Gor pg 234

The role of high slave is one referred to in SL gor but rarely played as intended.  It is basically a slave of great value whether it be for her leadership skills amongst the other slaves, one beloved by a man of a high caste or some other attribute or skill.  She is a privileged slave so accordingly she is given more latitude in terms of dress and mannerisms :  The High Slave often wears sandals and may not ask permission to speak.  In many ways a high slave is similar to that of a courtesan and/or concubine and may be used by others to gain influence upon her Master.

When discussing the role of High Slave the concept of the “princess slave” may creep into the conversation.  “Princess slave” is derogatory term referring to a role player who acts a bit like a spoiled and pampered brat whether it be in character or out of character.  A High Slave can be a “Princess Slave” but they do not necessarily go hand in hand.  She may not also be the “love slave” meaning the slave so loved by her Master.  Overall, the role of high slave is about her status among the community versus her behavior or her relationship with her Master.  Ena from Captive of Gor is an excellent example of the leader type High Slave and one I would love to emulate in this role.

Not as a high slave, clothed in jewelries and shimmering silks, tastefully bound, is she to be conducted to the site of her performance, some aristocratic banquet… - Guardsman of Gor, p. 260

Body Adornments are also an indication of the High Slave.  She is often allowed jewelry beyond the simple “bina” or beads of the common slave.  Overall her clothing is of much higher quality but must always be revealing in nature whether it be her decolletage, her legs or even just her shoulders.  A high slave rarely dresses as a Free Woman.

Regardless of status though, the High Slave must always remember her place:  She is simply a slave who could in heartbeat be stripped of her status amongst the chain for no reason other than it is the wishes of her Master.

I came across a beggar woman down by the docks one day, fishing for her evening meal – a dirty She-Urt who obviously been living on her own for sometime by her obvious state of disarray.  I regarded her and asked her politely, “Why don’t you seek the protection of the collar, Woman…your life would obviously be much improved from the way it is now.  The woman looked at me and laughed.  “A collar,” She said, “you must be joking.”  And with a softening of her voice she continued on with her tale…”Often times these men forget I am a free woman and look upon me in the same way they do a slave.  But I am quick to remind them I am not a slave…just merely a woman down on her luck.”

“From time to time I give myself to the men of this city for a few coins, but only when I am desperate or unable to fish or find a few scraps of food on a drunken sailor passed out somewhere in a dark alley.  I hate the idea of yielding to a man, but it is what I must do to survive.”

“Yes I could submit myself to some lonely Free Man or some tavern keep but my freedom is what I value the most.  My life is hard and pitiful but unlike the slave girls of Gor, I have the right to wear a pair of shoes whenever I please. ”

“And so I live on the streets alone…no family or companion to care for me.  I am nothing but a She-Urt, a beggar – but I am a free beggar, dear lady.”  And with that she looked away from me and continued to fish.  I was bit taken aback by her words but as I walked away I couldn’t help but understand everything she said:  Some slave girls complain about the loss of their name…but for me, the loss of shoes would be much more important.
