Michonne 1
Getting a bit deep I know –  but the above phrases are apparently common notions in the world of movie and literature when it comes to the use of African American characters. I first came across the phrase “magical negro” when doing a bit of googling on the character Michonne from Walking Dead. I love the character – unfortunately though I was saddened to hear that her character has being criticized for an up to date usage of the “magical negro” stereotype. So what does that mean exactly? Well, according to a couple sources (wikipedia largely and The Daily Beast), it is an archetypal character unique to American literature. The character is usually a member of a minority group (largely African-American) that possesses sage or magical abilities that help support the White Protaganist.  The “Magical Negro” generally has little character development, back story and is usually from an economically disadvantaged segment of society.  Often times they will appear to be working in such professions as janitor, maintenance worker etc and so on.  The character is also typified by a minority member who selflessly helps white people and is considered by some as archetypal racial throwback to such concepts as the Sambo and the Noble Savage.  TV Tropes.org and Wikipedia users have created lists of well known characters they deem as falling into this category, including Morpheus (The Matrix), Oda Mae Brown (Ghost) and even Jennifer Hudson’s character in the Sex and the City movie as other examples of this archetype.  The writer Toure put this concept really in perspective for me:

While some may think it complimentary to be considered “magical,” it is  infantilizing and offensive because it suggests black excellence is so shocking  it can only come from a source that is supernatural.

Read more: http://ideas.time.com/2012/09/26/the-magical-negro-falls-to-earth/#ixzz2Q0a5T4QS

Now, why is the use of this archetype negative? It seems to be that the character simply exists to support the main character and will never advance beyond that supporting role. Honestly, this is kind of true so far when it comes to the television portrayal of Michonne. In the comic series, Michonne’s character is much more developed and appears to have been used for Andrea’s back story instead,  an attorney, and for parts of Maggie’s story in the television show.  Both of these characters, if I might add, are white.

Furthermore, the series itself to me really made a huge error in not implementing an African-American character (or even female characters in general), like Michonne, as one of the group leaders. The series takes place in the state of Georgia and at one point near Atlanta in which the current population is at least 50% African American.  Wouldn’t it make sense that that African Americans would have a stronger presence in the stories? Off and on throughout this last season (I did not start watching the series until this winter), I kept asking myself, why are the “leaders” all white?
Michonne 2
Okay so I get what the critics are saying but I am not sure how to reconcile this when it comes to potential black characters I might create in role play or even in s a short story.  Does this mean that every black character, in a supprorting role, created by a white writer has the potential to more easily cross the line into the territory of this archetype?  How does one avoid creating a Magical Negro character in general? These are questions I keep asking myself after reviewing this concept and really don’t seem to have an answer.

Another criticism of the use of black characters by white writers, is the notion of Romantic Racism.  This occurs when a writer of a dominant group project their fears and beliefs onto an oppressed group. How this could translate into literature is the idea that poverty, strife and oppression leads an individual to a more enlightened way of thinking i.e. being poor, black and oppressed makes them a better person.  I view it as projecting our own “white guilt” onto a character and relieving our intellectual distress when it comes to the history of African-Americans and the obstacles they still face in our society today.

This leads me to think about a discussion I had with someone close to me about the intent of Quentin Tarentino, which eventually led to the demise of the relationship, LOL. For those of you not familiar with Tarentino, he is the driving force/director/writer or whatever behind such film phenoms as Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained.  Because of his films, I have seen and heard such humorous comments directed towards him as “The only white man allowed to be black.”  I argue, though, Tarentino tries too hard with his use of black characters – that his of language and, god forbid, featuring blaxploitation stars such as Pam Grier, is a form of Romantic Racism. My now ex friend felt the opposite.  Now, like “Foxy Brown” and other blaxploitation films in the past, one could argue that Tarentino IS helping advance the cause of black performers.  But is he going about it the right way?
Michonne 3
I am sure you are asking now what in the world does all this intellectual mumbo jumbo have to do with Second Life????  Well my role play of course! Will my creation of a black character make me guilty of the above two concepts? How do I avoid unknowingly creating characters that might possess the above traits?  Also do I have the right to create a character based off of a culture I will never be truly a member of in real life? I don’t have the answer for this for the time being so I guess I need to channel my inner Michonne and figure out the right path. :)

Anyway, I think Michonne (or the actress who plays her) is beautiful. So these pictures are my homage to her and the series that has captivated my attention for the past few months. Okay that’s all I got. So take care my friends and have a great second life!

Lark and League 1
One of my favorite people in Second Life is Sienia Trevellion who also happens to have a brand called Lark.  Sadly the store went dormant for a while but Sienia is back in the game and is now creating her own original mesh items, WOOT!  Her third release since her return, is this lovely neck corset called “Sansa” and it is sublime. Not only does she offer both rigged and unrigged versions but it is also scripted to change up the colors of the flowers and string.  I am pretty damn excited by this release.  Oh by the way, Sienia also released a wonder batch of bustiers recently (which I have yet to blog – bad Elle).  But check out Willow’s post here for all the details.

GSpot and Arwen's Creations for the We Love RP event 3
Wanna a clear a room full of Goreans? Scream out the term “Radical Feminist” and you will get an empty room and FAST!  All kidding aside, when I put this outfit together using pieces by the creators participating in the We <3 Role-Play event, the look make me think my avatar was an artistic rendition of the concept of radical feminism – a warrior fighting a patriarchal system that attempts to keep her in a position of “less than.”  This lady rocks!

Let’s take a minute to talk about Weaponry in role play fashion.  I think  at times I overlook the artistry that abounds when it comes to weapon design and make it just another accessory.  So much detail is referenced in the weapons, and I believe that showcasing these creations is something I should do more regularly.  Don’t get me wrong, I could not critique weapons in terms of function – but I know a good design when I see it and this bow from EZ weaponry has it.

Last but certainly not least is this new skin from League – and for anyone who knows me, they know I love my League skins!  Overall I am thrilled with the increased attention to and creation of  realistic ethnic skins on the grid nowadays and Aria is certainly a strong contender for one of my favorite black skins.  Incidentally, I haven’t taken this skin off yet since I bought it!

Anyway, that’s all I got today and don’t forget to check out the new We <3 RP event going on till the end of May.  So in the meantime, take care my friends and have a great Second Life!

The Library for We love RP 2
Greetings fellow role players!  The We <3 Role-Play event debuted this week to a smashing success!  Because of this, I thought I would take some time to post some of the looks over the next few days featured at the event.  First up is from a newish store called The Library.  The store is the new brain child of Sabina Takakura and Dream Resistance, formerly of Fantasia and I just knew these two couldn’t stay away from creating for too long!  As you can see the outfit is flexible for a multitude of genres (except Gorean Free Woman in by the book sims) and the texturing is sublime.  I definitely tout this as a must have for your role play wardrobe.

Oh and by the way, Exile is back and with a vengeance!  Along with four new styles, Kavar has implemented a new hair color hud for his designs along with a mulitude of new colors:  For more info on the hud, visit Kavar’s post here.  This particular hairdo I am sportin’ today is “Fire to the Rain” and it is simply RAWR!

Any who, that’s all I got for today but be sure and check out the event ASAP!  So take care my friends and have a great Second Life!

KnickKnack2
Recently I was asked by the owner of KnickKnack, Levia Larsson, to create an image she could use for a store poster of her slave outfit Marna.  I was absolutely thrilled and flattered by this!   I have been a long time fan of her work when it comes to role play fashion (gorean, medieval, Game of Thrones) so the honor was truly mine.  Her texture work is some of the best out there, in my humble opinion, and appears to be largely hand drawn.  Even though she has yet to jump into the world of mesh (and hopefully she will very soon), I highly encourage any role player to keep her store in mind when shopping for fashion.  Thank you Levia for the honor of gracing your store walls and, please, keep the beautiful things coming!

weloveroleplay2

Oh and by the way, Levia is going to be participating in the We <3 Role-Play event, the brain child of Ms. Arica Storaro.  The role-play shopping extravaganza will a feature w variety of RP fashion designers, including those that focus on fantasy, medieval, Gor etc.  The event starts May 4th and I will be posting the landmarks on that date.  (Event texture created by Hottest Resident).

That’s all I got today.  Details on the fashion in my KnickKnack store poster can be found below.  So till next time, take care my friends and have a great second life!

My hot Lola's 2
Some say Lola’s are HAWT.  Some say Lola’s are the worst thing to hit the grid since viewer 2.  What I say when asked about Lola’s is I think they are both silly and fun.  I actually have me a a pair of zee Lola’s and pull out them once in a while when I am in a whimsical mood.  Whimsical, you might ask? YES, whimsical! In my opinion, Lola’s were not designed to be realistic – they are a cartoon, manga, anime version of boobs. Now whether or not the creator will agree with me is another thing, though, all together!  I mean, look at the nips on these puppies – they look like they are lifting their lips to sky singing their praises to the goddess of nipples!  Once on a gorean forums thread discussing zee Lolas IN DETAIL,  I called them “attacking nipples” and the description seemed to stick throughout the thread.
My hot Lola's 1
Speaking of SL Gor, zee Lola’s have a huge and very, very vocal fanbase there. In fact at times, I felt like when it comes to the gorean role play community, you can create a huge drama by merely joking about them (here and here). Some of you who have known me over the years will acknowledge at times I can be a bit outspoken – sometimes even to my detriment!  So when I and a fellow player (both of us largely slave character players too) pointed out how funny it was to see a free woman character displaying her nipples for all the world to see, you would think we had insulted her intelligence!  If you play the character as the book seems to communicate to me, the last thing a modest free woman would display so openly are her nipples!

For the record, I am fine with Lola’s – in fact I think they can be campy fun.   Although, I have hard time really taking these attachments seriously or consider them all that sexy. But as an accessory I think they have a lot of potential (in whatever way you see fit) and I say rock those Lola’s ladies….ROCK ON!

Work Work Work1
I can’t say today was in my top five of great days: Heard from an ex that did nothing but open a wound that was just starting to heal and attended the memorial service of a co-workers father.  The service was beautiful – unfortunately though it brought to surface some memories of my own parents’ funerals.

So what’s a girl to do? Well, maybe this: Go home, meditate and hold your foster kitties for about an hour and might just start believing there was a point to all this.  Sorry for the emo – but I hate to admit it but I have seen better days than what I had today.

040213-3
Yes, really I did. I grew in a very racially divided city on the border of the midwest and the south - so for me to make a statement like that would be unusual from where I came from. I also, though, had parents who were open in terms of welcoming anyone into their home regardless of race, religion, ethnic background, socioeconomic status etc and so on. Some of you reading this may not think this is a very remarkable thing. But without giving my age away too much (LOL) - this WAS a remarkable thing BECAUSE of where I grew up and the decade.

I think if I didn’t have the parents I was blessed with, this statement I made in the title of this post would not have come easily from my lips. Imagine 1976, a time where our nation was in a huge transition period. Imagine this family, of upper middle class origins – very upper middle class I might add – allowing children that weren’t white into their home, often weekly, to participate in such activities as swimming and tutoring.   I am sure a few eyebrows were raised.  In my opinion, this type of upbringing allowed me to the view the world in different eyes than many of peers and eventually gave me a leg up, socially. down the road.  I am not touting that I am free of stereotypical thinking.  Nor am I saying I  am SO enlightened that a negative thought has never crossed my mind.  But because of my parents, it helped me to establish the belief that race is not a defining factor when it comes to Personhood.
040212-1But back to the title – here I was a blond-haired, blue-eyed child for the most part exposed to people who looked a lot like me except for the visitors my parents welcomed into our home.  My neighbors were white, my school had mandatory busing but the classrooms were still very racially divided. I was in the advanced classes that were, well, largely white students.  I really didn’t really understand the reasons for these divisions but they existed.

One lazy summer day on cable there was an all day film festival primarily of what is now called Blaxploitation films:  Uptown Saturday Night, Let’s Do it Again and eventually Foxy Brown.  I was seven, damn it. What did I know about this genre except the fact the first film featured Bill Cosby and he always made me laugh.  So there I was in the spacious “den” of my house, laughing and acting out the action scenes like I was a part of the films. But most of all, I was mesmerized by Pam Grier, hell I wanted to be Pam Grier.  In these films, the women were powerful, beautiful and independent.  In my seven-year old mind, to be strong, independent and beautiful I should become black.  Whoopi Goldberg once described in detail about how as a child she would walk around with a towel on her head,  pretending to have beautiful blond hair. I wanted the opposite:  dark skin, dark hair, dark eyes. To me, white beauty was boring. I wanted to be Foxy Brown.
040213-2
Now here I am now second life, dressing my avatar like a black woman.  At first I had my typical pang of “white guilt” in doing this and the statements such as the following ran through my head:

  • How dare I adorn my avatar in black skin when I don’t understand what is to be black!
  • Am I perpetuating stereotypes when imagining myself as Foxy Brown?
  • Is this right for me to do when I come from a country that held black americans in Servitude for what, close to 200 years?
  • Do I dare portray myself as a black character (Gorean in origin or even of Earth) in Gor?  Will people misinterpret my intent if I play an enslaved black woman?

These are questions that ran through my head the last week or so.  But damn it, I think Elle looks pretty in her black skin AND there some amazing ethnic skins coming out now (gotta work on the hairs though creators)! So why not celebrate the beauty of being black even when it’s not really who I am beyond the keyboard? For now I will end with this question and maybe talk a bit more about this in other posts.   Pfft, I hardly post now as it is so who knows if or when I will put thoughts to words anytime soon. So until then, take care my friends and have a great second life.
